The goal of the Department is to increase the communicative and academic language proficiency of students through the use of research-based strategies. The department consists of seven trained, experienced teachers who are qualified in literacy, teaching of English and special education studies.


Literacy continues to be an area of priority and challenge for us as a staff but more specifically as a Department. To this end, the English Department continues to explore and employ various research-based strategies to enhance teaching and learning at the school. Our main mode of delivering instruction to our very diverse student population remains flexibility grouping arrangements where students are placed in groups according to their reading abilities based on results obtained from the Mico Diagnostic Test. Teachers are expected to tailor classroom practices to meet the literacy and language needs of their group based on the specified standards as prescribed by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) Syllabus.


The school’s performance continues to improve in the CSEC examinations over the years. The school’s CSEC pass rate in English A is continuing to improve from 10% in 2011 to 40.74% in 2014.
